Raymond Wesley Nelson


Raymond Wesley Nelson was born September 23, 1919 to George and Anna Mae
Nelson in California, KY. He graduated from Campbell County High School and received a B.S.
from Eastern Kentucky University in 1943, and graduated with an M.A. from Xavier University
and also the University of Cincinnati. In 1939, he married Phyllis Satterlee, and to that union
were born six children. He taught Industrial Arts at Ludlow KY High School for one year, before
enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he served from 1943-1946. He made Pharmacist’s Mate 1st
Class and served in the South Pacific. He taught Industrial Arts at Newport Jr. High in Hamilton,
OH for 9 years and became librarian at Roosevelt Jr. High, where he coached the baseball team.
He then became librarian at Garfield Jr. High until his retirement in 1984. He was commissioned
KY Colonel in 1964 for his work with young people. He was the first president of Campbell
County Rural Knothole League, having helped organize the league. He was a lifelong member of
the V.F.W. Post 3205 in Alexandria, KY and a member of the educational associations N.E.A.,
O.E.A., and B.C.T.A. He was a lifelong Methodist and a member of Grace United Methodist
Church of Hamilton, OH where he served on many committees and as an usher. After moving to
Berea, KY in 2010, he attended the Berea United Methodist Church. He is preceded in death by
his son, Timothy Nelson; brother, Robert Nelson; and sister, Peggy Ackerman. He is survived by
his wife Phyllis, having enjoyed 73 years of marriage. He is also survived by five children: son,
Kenneth (Connie) Nelson; daughters Doris (Robert) Brinson, Frankye (Warren) May, Rebecca
(David) Evans, and Linda (Mark) Wygoda; and daughter-in-law Angela Nelson Knight (Ted);
brothers, George (Joy), Louis (Linda), Jim (Rita), Dave (Sophia), John (Cheryl), and Don
(Brenda); sister, Della Nelson; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be
held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Alexandria Funeral Home, Alexandria, KY from
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM with the Funeral following at Noon. Please send memorials to Berea

    My sincere condolences to Phyllis and family during this time of sorrow, may the love of family and friends help you through your grief and may the promise from God for a future "resurrection" back to life bring comfort to your heart.     I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Ray Nelson. My sincerest condolences to Phyllis and the entire family. Ray and Phyllis and family were my next door neighbors growing up, and I have many fond memories of them. Ray was always busy "making" something - whether in his woodwork shop or on the front porch making those surgical clips. He always had a ready smile and friendly word. I always saw Ray and Phyllis together -- a wonderful example of a loving couple. Many prayers to all of you. In Christ, Steve Dalton

    When I met Dad he was 60 years old, yet he had a profound impact on my life and who I would become. While living and teaching in Hamilton, I have heard many stories about Dad and have enjoyed every one. His patience, kindness, generosity, and hard work have taught me what it means to live a good life, and I feel so blessed to have been a part of this wonderful family. Love, prayers, and God's strength to all as we remember and miss Dad. Angie

    Mr.Nelson was a great man.What a blessing to all the students and young folks who had a chance to interact with him.God bless the family and thank you for letting us share him.He was kind,compassionate and inspirational.This world is a better place because he has been here.

    Phyllis:Maxine and I were sorry to hear of Ray's passing. We both thought a great deal of him. Ray was an excellent educator. Hamilton schools were fortunate to have his service for so many years.

    RAY WAS MY TRACK COACH During the spring of 1943 at Ludlow High School. Needless to say, we all lost touch as we joined various armed forces during ww11.
