John A. Gilliam

John A. Gilliam, age 77, of Fort Thomas, KY passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Highland Spring Fort Thomas. John was born September 9, 1939 in Corbin, KY. John graduated from Corbin High School in 1957 and Cumberland College in 1961. John will be best remembered as a special education teacher for 27 years in the Campbell County School System. He practiced inclusion for hundreds of students when others were simply exploring how to make it happen. John’s legacy of “changing lives for those who seek so little yet need more than most from those who are blessed to be able to give” will be forever remembered. John was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Kathryn (nee Bolton) Gilliam and a brother Captain Roy Gilliam USAF. He leaves behind hundreds of friends from, Corbin, First Baptist Church of Cold Spring, Spare Time Grill, Walmart, Meijer, card playing friends, former students and their families, and dear friends, Gene and Judi Gerding and family.  John requested a private service and interment in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Corbin, KY. Alexandria Funeral Home, Alexandria, KY, is in charge of arrangements.Memorials to The Point 104 West Pike Street, Covington, KY 41011, where a classroom in their new Education Center will be named in his honor.

  3. John was an amazing teacher who cared tremendously about his students and their families. He was a pioneer in his field and volunteered tirelessly advocating for special people. John went above and beyond, helping those he taught to have independent and meaningful lives. He was loved by all. Job well done, my friend.
